The Ulster BOCES Buildings and Grounds department is seeking Substitute Custodial Workers for on-call positions as needed. The positions that would be covered have work schedules of Monday through Friday during 1st, 2nd or 3rd shifts. Fingerprinting required. All Civil Service laws, rules and regulations apply.

Civil Service Classification: Non-Competitive. Merit and fitness competitive examination does not apply.

Rate of pay: $19.00/hour

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
The work involves responsibility for the performance of building cleaning and minor maintenance tasks. The work is carried out in accordance with established procedures or specific instructions and involves repetitive manual work. This class differs from that of Custodian in that Custodial Worker is unskilled entry-level work, whereas Custodian functions at a higher level and has greater responsibility. The work is performed under the direct supervision of a higher level employee. Supervision over the work of others is not normally a function of the class. Does related work, as required.

  • May perform all functions of a Cleaner as well as:
  • Delivers packages and messages;
  • Assists in unloading incoming supplies;
  • Repairs window shades, replaces light bulbs, soap and towels;
  • Paints rooms and equipment and assists in making minor plumbing, carpentry and electrical repairs;
  • May mow lawns, trim shrubs, rake leaves and perform a variety of other grounds keeping tasks as assigned;
  • May assist in the operation of an oil, gas or coal fired pressure heating system including firing and removing ashes;
  • May place and remove traffic safety signs.

Network Systems Specialist I or IIJP5112

The Mid-Hudson Regional Information Center (MHRIC) has two (2) full-time, 12-month positions, to support the operations of various internal IT infrastructures as well as our regional customers. The MHRIC serves 47 districts and 4 BOCES in a 4-county region. The candidate must be a motivated team player with problem solving and diagnostic skills, extensive technical knowledge, and good task management abilities. Additionally, you must have the ability to relate highly technical information, both written and verbally, in a clear and easily understood manner to non-technical personnel. The ideal candidate should be able to optimize systems' efficiency, improve network security, provide timely technical support, and introduce new technology to the organization. Experience with all aspects of networking including but not limited to: Microsoft workstation and server products, Active Directory, VM or other virtualization, network switches, routers and storage devices. Strong knowledge of TCP/IP and networking concepts. Technical experience in a computer center environment required. NETWORK SYSTEMS SPECIALIST I
GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES
:
This position involves the responsibility for coordinating and supporting the operations of various internal internet infrastructures as well as regional internet systems services supported by the Mid-Hudson Regional Information Center (MHRIC) to component school districts. An incumbent is responsible for monitoring the daily operations of the network systems and providing subsequent on-going maintenance and support of such networks. This position normally resides in the Operations and Programming Department within MHRIC. This position differs from the Network Systems Specialist II by virtue of a lesser level of responsibility and less complex assignments. The work is normally performed under the general supervision of the Operations and Programming Manager with leeway allowed for exercising independent judgement in carrying out the details of the work. Supervision is not a function of this class. Does related work as required.

SPECIFIC DUTIES:

  • Supports, maintains, and ensures constant Internet connectivity in MHRIC labs and at component school district locations;
  • Monitors and maintains e-mail systems supported by MHRIC;
  • Supports and maintains Local Area Network (LAN) software applications on MHRIC staff computers;
  • Monitors, supports and maintains anti-virus products for MHRIC staff and servers;
  • Assists in monitoring, supporting and maintaining current operating systems in use at school district and RIC production servers;
  • Assists with the planning, installation and maintenance of all data communications equipment, terminals, modems, printers, cables, and telephone lines for MHRIC servers and clients;
  • Maintains back-up system for production servers;
  • Imports and migrates data to networked workstations in computer lab environment;
  • Provides first-level technical diagnosis and trouble shooting when referred by the Help Desk personnel;
  • May coordinate district purchases of preventive maintenance and/or corrective programs (such as anti-virus software packageswith vendors;
  • Maintains security on all web-based products and databases in the component school districts;
  • Performs software upgrades and patches on networked PC’s, either in the lab using PC Anywhere (or similar) software or on-site in the district;
  • Provides systematic in-depth technical analysis to identify, isolate and follow-up with problems with networked PC and software functionality;
  • Meet directly with vendors and make recommendations to districts regarding new equipment;
  • Assists in monitoring specific applications to ensure appropriate turnaround time for users;
  • Keeps supervisor informed of repeated problems, resolutions and recommended course of action, including enhancements to software applications;
  • May receive periodic training and serve as an integral part of the Disaster Recovery Team;
  • May train administrative and clerical staff on basic office applications software such as Excel, Word Perfect, Lotus, Power Point, etc.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Either:
A. Graduation from a New York State registered or regionally accredited college or university with a Bachelor’s Degree, which included or was supplemented by fifteen (15) credit hours* in Computer Science, Data Processing, Information Systems, Information Technology, Management Information Systems, Business or closely related field and one (1) year (full-time paid, or its’ part-time equivalent) technical experience in a computer center environment; OR 

B. Graduation from a New York State registered or regionally accredited college or university with an Associate’s Degree, which included or was supplemented by fifteen (15) credit hours* in Computer Science, Data Processing, Information Systems, Information Technology, Management Information Systems, Business or closely related field and three (3) years  (full-time paid, or its’ part-time equivalent) technical experience in a computer center environment, OR 

C. Graduation from high school, or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and five (5) years of technical experience in a computer center environment; OR 

D. An equivalent combination of training and experience as indicated above. 
*Coursework in the use of specific programs such as WORD, EXCEL, or ACCESS and data entry is not acceptable.
 
Special Requirement: Possession of a valid New York State driver’s license appropriate to the vehicles operated or otherwise demonstrate their ability to meet the transportation needs of the job.
 
Special Requirement for appointment in School Districts including BOCES: In accordance with the Safe Schools Against Violence in Education (SAVE) legislation and by the Regulations of the Commissioner of Education, candidates for employment in school districts must obtain clearance for appointment from the State Education Department based upon fingerprinting and a criminal history background check.



NETWORK SYSTEMS SPECIALIST Il
GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES
:
This position involves the responsibility for overseeing the overall operations of the Local Area Network (LAN) and Wide Area Network (WAN) systems within the Mid-Hudson Regional Information Center (MHRIC) as well as providing technical services to component school districts. An incumbent is responsible for managing the daily operations of the network systems and providing subsequent on-going maintenance and support of such networks. Additionally, an incumbent is responsible for research and development on information technology products and services. This position normally resides in the Operations and Programming Department within the Mid-Hudson Regional Information Center (MHRIC). This position differs from the Network Systems Specialist I by virtue of a higher level of responsibility and complexity of assignments. The work is normally performed under the general supervision of the Operations and Programming Manager with leeway allowed for exercising independent judgment in carrying out the details of the work. Supervision is not normally a function of this class. Does related work as required.

SPECIFIC DUTIES:

  • Designs LAN/WAN workstation and network systems, servers, hubs, and integrated lines for MHRIC and client servers;
  • Monitors, supports and maintains internal MHRIC network infrastructures;
  • Coordinates the planning, installation and maintenance of all data communications equipment, terminals, modems, printers, cables and telephone lines for MHRIC servers and clients;
  • Provides customers with first level diagnosis and trouble shooting on Internet protocol issues;
  • Installs LAN/WAN software upgrades and patches as available;
  • Performs research and development on all future LAN/WAN equipment, software and applications;
  • Performs evaluations and analysis of all new Internet or web-based products;
  • Meets weekly with MHRIC technical and Help Desk staff to recommend enhancements to hardware, software and applications based on discussions with MHRIC applications staff;
  • Imports and migrates data to networked workstations in computer lab environment;
  • Coordinates district purchases of preventive maintenance and/or corrective programs (such as anti-virus software packages) with vendors;
  • Oversees and participates in the maintenance of security on all web-based products and databases in the component school districts;
  • Performs software upgrades and patches on networked PC’s, either in the lab using PC Anywhere (or similar) software or on-site in the district;
  • Directs and provides systematic in-depth technical analysis to identify, isolate and follow up problems with networked PC and software functionality;
  • Meets directly with vendors and makes recommendations to districts regarding new equipment;
  • Maintains the MHRIC computer lab equipment and software, ensuring constant connectivity;
  • Monitors specific applications to ensure appropriate turnaround time for users;
  • Keeps apprised of repeated problems, resolutions and recommended course of action;
  • May act as technical liaison between MHRIC and data communication equipment vendors;
  • May receive periodic training and serve as an integral part of the Disaster Recovery Team;
  • Responsible for ensuring uninterrupted power service to MHRIC systems;
  • May attend training and continuing education courses to keep current to improvements and emerging network technologies;
  • May train MHRIC staff members in the role of Internet protocol products offered.
